About this session

The opening plenary panel session introduces challenges and responses by design industry experts using LCA to sharpen sustainable design decision making. Buildings account for over 40% of operational and embodied energy consumption and, given the current carbon intensive energy grid makeup, a material percentage of our carbon footprint. Building efficiencies and lower carbon grid mixes continue to improve operational impact profiles. Mass timber and other carbon sequestering materials are also helping to effectively address the current clear and present danger of rising atmospheric CO2. As both operational and embodied performance measured by this single ecological indicator improve, robust LCA methodologies and tools track embodied environmental effects across a broader set of impact categories.
